A Little Bit About Me
Sarah Korbeck, DPT, CIMI, CLD
After fourteen years as a practicing pediatric physical therapist, I knew that my heart needed something different. Many years ago, I had the opportunity to participate in a mission trip to Haiti, where the birth of a child can be very dangerous due to the conditions they live in and the lack of medical care that they have available to them. It is something that fueled me to explore birth work. We are so very blessed to have safer places to support us here in the US, but there is still way too much trauma in people’s birth stories. Six years and over 100 births later, I still consider it an honor and a privilege to be invited into such an intimate and important space.
For those that love details, I received my Bachelor of Science from Towson University, then continued on to complete my Masters and Doctorate of Physical Therapy, at the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Following graduation in 2003, I practiced as a licensed pediatric physical therapist in the Cecil County Public School System’s Infant and Toddler Program and Special Education program. I was certified by the International Loving Touch Foundation, Inc. as a Certified Infant Massage Instructor (CIMI) and taught “Mommy and Me” style infant massage classes at The Birth Center in Newark, DE.
I have completed doula trainings with both DONA and CAPPA and have been certified as a labor doula by both The Birth Center and CAPPA. I view myself as an eternal student and truly enjoyed continuing education courses with Spinning Babies, Hypnobirthing, Evidence Based Birth and many more. And last, but certainly not least, I learn something from every birth worker and every birth that I have the honor of attending.
I’m hopeful my background in human anatomy and continued education in birth work give me a balanced perspective. I believe that we are truly created to walk this journey and have unending faith in what women are capable of, but I am also grateful for modern medicine when it is necessary to keep my people safe.
There are many beautiful paths to holding your sweet babe. If I do my job well, you will feel prepared, empowered and supported all along the way and have a positive story to tell. No matter which path we need to take.
